Alvars are rare ecosystems in Ontario and even rarer around the world. They consist of limestone pavement at or very close to the surface. With little soil and often poor drainage, a unique plant and animal community is created, with some species rarely seen elsewhere. Over 450 plant species, 142 butterfly and dragonfly species and 238 bird species have been identified in this small, local ecosystem.

PHOTO FEATURES: Alvars consist of flat limestone with low-growing vegetation and often lack the drama of more three-dimensional landscapes in Ontario. However, as globally and provincially significant ecosystems, alvars offer a variety of uncommon plant and animal species.
NATURAL FEATURES: Many alvar species of plants and animals, mostly birds, are uncommon in other parts of Ontario. See the following guides to more information:
TRAIL NOTES: This habitat is vulnerable to disturbance. Trail Access is limited to four short trails. STAY ON THE TRAILS to protect this sensitive ecosystem.
